In my interview, you’ll read about past and current projects. What I’m promoting now… which is of course,
I See the Animals Sleeping a Bedtime Story.
You’ll also read about books we’re reading at home, a wee bit about process and more…
So let me tell you a bit about Sunshine Smile Publications. They are:
Soaked
Not wanting to be considered a common fowl, Gallus Domesticus Kelly focused his energy on becoming just like his legendary big screen idol.
Determined to fly the coop, he would rehearse endlessly. When not practicing, Gallus could be found looking skyward, searching for that one gray cloud. Then one particularly pitchy night, drops of rain began to fall. The other chickens ran in fear… but not Gallus.
Gallus was last seen at an Oklahoma bus station. He had with him, the clothes on his back, an umbrella, and in his hand he held a one way ticket to…. Hollywood.
I’m singing in the rain….just singing in the rain…
what a glorious feeling, I’m happy again!

Houston SCBWI Conference 2011
So every year I write a little about the conference right after I’ve attended, but this year I seem to have procrastinated for lack of words..or photographs… or exhaustion maybe. I don’t know.
I won’t give you the line up or the deets of everyone’s talks. There are plenty of blogs that have already covered that. Besides, I don’t want to spoil it for you should you get the opportunity to hear the wonderful speakers that were there! http://www.scbwi-houston.org/calendar/2011-conference-the-art-of-book-craft/. I will tell you though, how I felt at the conference.
I’ve been very busy this year with my first illustrated book, I See Animals Sleeping coming out in June 2011, a completed book dummy and working to get my portfolio in order for the conference, So I felt tired and a little anxious. Isn’t there always a little anxiety when you show your portfolio? You might as well be showing your heart… but there is was. My quirky heart… I mean portfolio!
I had my portfolio review with Laurent Linn, who I must say, is the nicest and most intuitive reviewer I’ve ever experienced. He gave me ideas and directions and confirmed some things for me. I needed to hear what he had to say!
And you know what… I won the portfolio competition! …. and now… my head is full of all kinds of ideas…. and some are … well kind of quirky!
Journey
Away they flew… brushing branches and leaves, startling birds and squirrels nestled high in the treetops. Houses and cows looked like toys set out on a carpet of green. “Where are we headed Professor Mordicai?” asked Ellie as the basket found it’s foothold in the clouds. “We’re headed for the land of……”
OK Friends…. you tell me… where do you think they are headed? I don’t know either…. but I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Reverse

Ruby Rue was beautiful of heart
Though her outward appearance gave town folks a start
Her dreams of a suitor had not yet come true
With just internal beauty, what’s a poor hag to do?
So she consulted her Grimoire and found a grand hex
She enchanted a stone and hung it round her neck
Then she squealed to the mirror “Why Ruby… You’re hot!”
But her stone, it was faulty, for to others… she was not!
The lesson to garner, so you won’t be alone…
Keep your hope in your heart and not in a stone.
